Director-General of Police D. Gautam Sawang has asked the police to break the myth about police stations and make them people-friendly.
Participating in a programme held on Tuesday as part of Police Commemoration Week at Police Parade Grounds here, the DGP said the police personnel were making a great sacrifice for providing a peaceful life to the public.
Mr. Sawang, along with Vijayawada Police Commissioner Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao and other officers, visited the stalls put up by various wings of the police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) at the ground. Different types of weapons, general diary, Vajra vehicles, 4th Lion App, Falcon and other vehicles were displayed explaining the duties of the police right from a constable to a Station House Officer (SHO).
Students of different schools and colleges visited the stalls and interacted with the officers. Police personnel explained to them the importance of the Police Commemoration Week being observed from October 15 to 21.
Interacting with the students, the DGP asked the children to get their doubts clarified, during their visit to the police stations. Students showed interest in shaking hands with Mr. Sawang.
“Many police died while fighting against Maoists, smugglers, mafia gangs and the anti-social elements. We salute the police personnel who sacrificed their lives for the people,” said Mr. Sawang adding that officers would visit the houses of the bereaved families and enquire about their welfare.
“We request the public and the students to visit police stations and the open houses arranged in the stations,” the DGP said.
Police would organise blood donation camps, conduct essay-writing, elocution and drawing competitions for students, band shows and marathons during the week-long programmes, Mr. Sawang said.
Welfare activities
Speaking on the welfare activities for police and home guards, the Head of the Police Force in the State said that government would soon announce more welfare activities for police personnel in the State.
“An App will be created for monitoring weekly offs for policemen in the State. Through the App, advance information will be given to the constables, head constables and others availing the facility so that they can plan the day,” the DGP said.
