Basavraj, a strategist

In the recent times, all major strikes on security forces and political leaders, including that of the recent killing of Araku MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former MLA Siveri Soma in Dumbriguda mandal in Visakhapatnam, and the killing of 17 Congress leaders, including the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Vidya Charan Shukla, and Salwa Judum founder Mahendra Karma in Chhattisgarh in 2013, the strategy and design was formulated by one man – Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavraj.

Till about two months ago, he was heading the Central Military Commission, but now he has been elevated to the post of general secretary of the CPI (Maoist). Be it the killing of 24 CRPF personnel in Sukma in Chhattisgarh in July this year or the ambush at Chintalnar in Dantewada that left 76 CRPF personnel dead, Basavraj has a hand. No major operation goes without his design and approval, said Visakhapatnam SP Attada Babujee.

He is one among the fiercest commanders and is a field strategist with sound knowledge of the red corridor across AP, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra.

He is an expert with IEDs, has good network with arms smugglers and illegal arms makers and an expert in guerilla warfare.

He carries an AK-47 and is surrounded by at least three rings of cadres armed with AKs, SLRs, carbine and INSAS rifles.

He is a graduate engineer from Regional Engineering College, Warangal, now NIT-Warangal, and a native of Jiyannapeta in Kotabommali mandal in Srikakulam district . Except for being arrested in Srikakulam in 1980 , he has been elusive since then.
