Several latest advances have emerged in the area of total knee replacement surgery that help in providing painless operation without any side effects and also a total normal post-operative life for the patients.
Showcasing these advanced aspects, the consultant surgeons of the Apollo Hospitals here telecast a live knee replacement surgery to the trainee surgeons at an Ahmedabad hospital in Gujarat. The trainee surgeons, who benefited from this programme, included those from the Asia-Pacific countries of Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, and so on.
Explaining about the recent developments, senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Madan Mohan Reddy said that in the past, one in four patients used to have a feeling of some discomfort and this was totally eliminated now in the latest procedures.
He said that the trainee surgeons from other countries were being exposed to these advances through the live surgeries.
Addressing a press conference along with other surgeons, Dr. Madan Mohan said that in 2003, there were only 9,000 patients who underwent knee replacement surgery in the country but the numbers have reached 75,000 by 2013. This was mainly due to the fact that the people wanted to lead active and comfortable lives.
Dr. Madan Mohan said that the awareness and affordability have also increased tremendously on the issue of knee replacement surgeries over the years which was another reason for more and more people in the age groups of 55 to 85 years going for these surgeries without any second thoughts.
Under the latest methods, the surgeries were being conducted with the help of computer navigation which helps in precision bone cutting with 100% results. Moreover, there would be no loss of blood with the other benefits of early recovery, quicker discharge from the hospital and better knee function.
