AP unveils plans for creating educational hub

Proposes IIM, IIIT at Vizag, IIT at Tirupati and AIIMS near Guntur

Andhra Pradesh Government has proposed the setting up of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indian Institute of Information Technology, petroleum and tribal universities in and around Visakhapatnam.

These four institutes are part of the 11 national institutions that would be coming up in Andhra Pradesh in the wake of the State’s bifurcation in accordance with the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday soon after he entered his chambers in the Secretariat, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Human Resources Development (HRD), Ganta Srinvasa Rao along with Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana Rao and Health Minister K. Srinivasa Rao, said following elaborate discussions with the Ministers, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has approved tentative proposals, including the area needed for each institution.

Three clusters

He said the 13 districts in the State have been divided into three clusters—Visakhapatnam, Krishna-Guntur and Tirupati for locating the proposed institutions and around 1,000 acres was required in each cluster.

The Collectors of Krishna, Guntur, Visakhapatnam and Chittoor have been asked to identify the land and place the proposals to Chief Minister by June 20.

It was estimated that the land required for IIM would be 200 acres, IIIT (100 acres), tribal university (500 acres) and petroleum university (200 acres).

The Krishna-Guntur cluster would be housing an All India Institute of Medical Sciences-type institution (200 acres), National Institute of Technology (300 acres), Agricultural University (500 acres) and National Institute of Disaster Management (10 acres).

He said that it was planned to set up Central University (500 acres) IIT (300 acres) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research ( 200 acres) in the Tirupati cluster.

Visit to Delhi

Mr.Srinivasa Rao said Mr. Chandrababu Naidu along with State Ministers planned to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani and other Central Ministers with concrete proposals during his visit to Delhi on June 25 and 26.

The Chief Minister was keen that admissions to some of the institutions should be commenced this academic year.
