Just when people of the city thought all their woes will go with the completion of the flyover at the Kanaka Durga temple, pending for over a decade, authorities have pushed the deadline further again.

They had announced that the road, blocked for the flyover work, will be opened to traffic starting with two-wheelers on February 28. It did happen, albeit partially, when only parents taking their wards to examination centres on two-wheelers were allowed.

The Kanaka Durga Flyover intended to ease the congested stretch of Vijayawada-Hyderabad (NH 65) was supposed to be completed before Krishna Pushkaralu in August, 2016. The deadline was later moved to August, 2017, March, 2018 and now August, 2018.

While the delay in completion of the flyover construction is the concern of the government, the blockage of NH between Kummaripalem junction and the Prakasam Barrage for even motorcyclists has turned into a major cause of concern for thousands of people who used to commute through the route on a daily basis.

The road blocked in September last year was supposed to be opened for traffic by the end of the year and the latest deadline has been set for March 31. This is despite the announcement of the Collector twice that traffic would be allowed after January 15 and end of February.

“Though release of traffic had been planned from March 1, the difficulty in the erection of wings caused a delay of nearly two weeks recently. Once the wings are in place, motorcycles and light motor vehicles will be allowed to use the road,” Superintending Engineering of R&B and in charge of the project G. John Moshae told The Hindu .

Three targets

“As per the Chief Minister’s instructions, we have set three targets. One for the release of traffic by March 31, completion of works in the canal portion by May 31 and completion of the entire project by August 15,” Mr. John said.

However, as per the schedule of the contractor of the project, Soma Infrastructure, the project would be finished only by September. “We may have to push the contractor for early completion of the project and keep it ready for inauguration on August 15 and from the department, every support is being extended,” an official said. So far only 65% of the project, including six-laning of the road from the Padmavati Ghat to the Kankadurga Varadhi, has been completed.
