Following the acute shortage of coal supply from the Singareni Collieries Company Limited, another 200 MW unit of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ramagundam has stopped power generation on Tuesday.

The 2600 MW NTPC Ramagundam had already stopped power generation in another unit (200 MW) on Monday due to coal shortage. Against the installed capacity of 2600 MW, the NTPC Ramagundam is operating 2200 MW of power stations. But, it had reduced the plant load factor (PLF) due to shortage of coal and is generating only 1400 MW now.

Following the incessant rains, coal production was hampered in the open cast projects of the SCCL in the Ramagundam region. During the last three days, the Singareni coal mine had lost coal production of more than 1.5 lakh metric tonnes due to inundation of OCPs.

The consumes 38,000 metric tonnes of coal every day and Singareni supplies 32,000 to 35,000 metric tonnes of coal daily.

Due to decline in coal production in OCPs, the Singareni was supplying only 18,000 metric tonnes of coal per day to the NTPC Ramagundam. Similarly, the coal supply from Mahanadi coal fields and Western coal fields to the NTPC had also declined considerably due to rains. The sources said that the NTPC was also planning to take another unit for annual overhauling due to shortage of coal supply.
