Expressing concern over a spate of suicides by tobacco growers, majority of them tenant farmers, YSRC Whip in Parliament Y.V. Subba Reddy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take corrective steps and provide succour to the growers.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, a copy of which was released to the media here on Wednesday, the MP said it was private loans secured by tenant growers which pushed them to take the extreme step of ending their lives.

Compensation and other benefits provided to registered tobacco growers, should be extended to tenant farmers also, he said.
