VIJAYAWADA: A first year engineering student at IIIT, Nuzvid, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in her hostel room on Thursday.

The victim, Veena, 18, was a native of Rajeswarapuram in Khammam district of Telangana. Though the reason behind the suicide is yet to be known, Veena’s friends told the police that she was allegedly upset over a love affair and reportedly told them that she would die, after a phone conversation last night.

Citing headache Veena stayed back in the hostel, and at around 10 a.m. she brought medicine from the pharmacy as per instructions of hostel warden and locked herself up in the room later, Nuzvid DSP V. Srinivas said.

When her roommates returned in the afternoon, they found the room locked and broke the window glass only to find Veena hanging from the ceiling. Later, they informed the college management, which rushed her to Nuzvid area hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

“The reasons are still unclear, but her roommates told us that she was upset after a phone conversation last night. They were then told that she would commit suicide but they did not take it seriously,” Mr. Srinivas said.

However, a FIR is yet to be registered (as on 6 p.m.) as the police are waiting for the girl’s parents. “Her father is at Hyderabad and is coming here. We will register the case as per his complaint and investigation is already on,” Mr. Srinivas said.

HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao ordered the IIIT director to probe into the incident and submit a report soon. IIIT Director V. Venkatadas appointed an internal committee to conduct an inquiry into the death of the student. Veena was at the university since 2014 when she joined the five-year integrated course after Class X.
