The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday sought Governor N. D. Tiwari’s intervention in resolving the political crisis in the state over the continuance of K. Rosaiah as Chief Minister.
“The Governor should convene an assembly session immediately and direct Mr. Rosaiah to prove his majority on the floor of the House as there is total chaos on the issue,” BJP senior leader and former union minister Vidyasagar Rao told reporters here.
After the demise of Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash, there is a political crisis in the state which is now leading to a constitutional crisis, he said.
The Governor should take initiative to resolve the crisis when the Congress high command is silent on calling its legislative party meeting in the state, the BJP leader said.
The state is facing a peculiar situation as most cabinet ministers, loyal to late Rajasekhara Reddy, have been demanding that his son Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy be made the Chief Minister, saying Mr. Rosaiah is only a caretaker chief minister, Mr. Rao said.
“As there is no mention of caretaker or temporary Chief Minister in the Constitution, there is a need to define and codify the subject in the Constitution as no state in the country faced such a situation,” the former union minister said.
In the absence of mentioning of caretaker or temporary chief minister, the present development in Andhra Pradesh would become a new precedent, Mr. Rao observed.
