Five MLAs, including three from TRS and two from TDP, were today suspended from the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for seven days for their unruly behaviour during Governor E S L Narasimhan’s address to the joint sitting of both the houses.

Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu moved a motion seeking suspension of the MLAs which was approved by voice vote.

Deputy Speaker Nadendla Manohar termed the behaviour of some members as “unruly, unjustified and uncalled for” and observed that the incidents in the House yesterday were “shameful for democracy.”

“We have not been able to follow the high standards of public life that we are expected to. Members have to rise above their petty issues and safeguard the dignity of the House,” Mr. Manohar noted.

Asserting that it was the responsibility of every member to uphold the values of the House, the Deputy Speaker said severe action was warranted against the members who misbehaved.

Sridhar Babu endorsed these views and said yesterday’s incidents in the House were “totally unwanted.”

Accordingly, he moved the motion for suspension of T Harish Rao, K Sammaiah and Vidyasagar of TRS, A Revanth Reddy and P Mahender Reddy of TDP from the House for a week.

The Assembly was then adjourned till Monday.

Bedlam prevailed in the State Legislature yesterday as TRS and TDP MLAs from Telangana region virtually manhandled Mr. Narasimhan as he was delivering the customary address to the joint sitting of both houses on the opening day of the Budget Session.
