Congress retains Tekkali Assembly seat in AP

The Congress Party has won the Tekkali Assembly seat in Srikakulam district for which counting was held on Monday.

Mrs. K. Bharathi of the Congress defeated her nearest TDP rival Mr. K. Atchan Naidu by a margin of 7,173 votes. She is the widow of K. Revathapathi whose death caused the byelection. Mr. Naidu is the brother of former Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party leader K. Yerran Naidu.

Polling was held on September 10.

Ms. Bharathi's easy victory is attributed to the sympathy generated by her husband's demise as well as the death of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash on September 2. This is reflected in the improvement of the Congress party's victory margin from 1,818 votes in May this year to over 7,100 votes now. The Praja Rajyam candidate stood a poor third in the byelection.
