Congress MP from Vijayawada, L Rajagopal, who has resigned his Lok Sabha seat, today said that he will join the movement for keeping Andhra Pradesh united and against the creation of Telangana.
He told a press conference here that all the Telugu speaking areas of Andhra Pradesh, including Telangana, were one and they were unified from the erstwhile Madras and Hyderabad states on the basis of language.
“Therefore, they should remain one and should not weaken themselves by losing their bargaining power in a federal system,” Rajagopal said.
Rajagopal said the 225 MLAs in the 294-member Andhra assembly were opposed to the creation of Telangana and demanded introduction of a resolution favouring Telangama state.
“Only then you will know the real position in the assembly,” he said.
Asked about his resignation, Rajagopal refused to disclose the contents of his letter to Speaker Meira Kumar.
“There will be a by-election to Vijayawada and I have told the high command that it should field a candidate from Telangana so that the broadmindedness of the Andhra people will be proved,” he said.
The Congress leader said the decision to create Telangana was announced not by the party but by the UPA Government.
