VIJAYAWADA: Several seasoned marathoners will take part in the Elite Category, which covers a distance of 21km from IGMC stadium to Manthena Satyanarayana nature cure hospital on Karakatta on Sunday, according to Madhu Vasepalli of DEEP Trust here on Thursday.

He said professional marathoners from Nigeria and Kenya will take part in the run held in 21K, 10K, 5K and 3K categories. “Professionals run in the 21k and 10k segments while the last two distances are meant for fun runners,” he added.

He said the organising committee has already reached the desired number of participants (i.e) 10,000. “Each one will be given a commemorative medal and cash awards of worth Rs. 20 lakh would be awarded to the winners of the marathon”.

Amaravati Marathon is a yearly event that symbolises the might and emergence of the people’s capital. The marathon will be a first-of-its-kind event that exemplifies the spirit of unity of the citizens of Andhra Pradesh in building India’s youngest and newest city.

The run is being organised by city-based DEEP Trust (Disease Eradication through Education and Prevention), in association with the active support of the Police Department and Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.

He said the marathon was an excellent opportunity for people of the new capital to be a part of an initiative for creating awareness on health related activities and also showcase their talent. “As part of the physical literacy drive initiated by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, the Trust had launched programmes like marathons and Happy Sundays besides other initiatives like mother and child awareness program, health screening camps for all sections of society and importance of water and sanitation in society”.
