APSRTC may vend high security number plates

The Andhra Pradesh government is bracing to introduce high security number plates for vehicles from June in accordance with the Supreme Court's order.

Initially, the number plates would be compulsory for new vehicles to be registered from June 1. All motor vehicles already in use would be given two years' time to get these plates fixed by the Road Transport Authority at cost-to-owner basis, S.P. Singh, Principal Secretary, Transport, told The Hindu.

Mr. Singh said the government was examining if Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) could be handed over the work of manufacturing and vending the plates through its establishments all over the State. The objective was to ensure reasonable price to owners as otherwise the government could not guarantee the same if the private sector was involved. Moreover, the corporation did not look for profit.

Prospective vendors and manufacturers of high security number plates are supposed to have type approval certificates from five testing agencies in various parts of the country, but the APSRTC so far does not have such certification. However, Mr. Singh said the corporation might be asked to set up facilities at its depots to distribute the plates after completing all formalities. The RTA will do the job of giving numbers. The new plates will be chromium hologram based and will have registration and engine numbers embossed on them.
