The Andhra Pradesh government will widen three accident-prone highways in the State with Rs. 90 crore financial assistance from the World Bank.
The government has identified the three State highways between Anakapalli and Anandapuram (34 km), Renigunta and Rayalacheruvu (26 km) and Hyderabad and Bijapur (124 km) as the most accident-prone.
Besides, the Vijayawada-Hyderabad National Highway-9 is also considered to be accident-prone and the four-laning of this road is in progress, officials said.
Chief Minister K Rosaiah, who presided over the first meeting of the State Road Safety Council as its chairman here on Monday, directed officials of transport and other departments to take immediate steps to check accidents on National and State highways.
He wanted a short-term action plan prepared to achieve the desired results.
The Chief Minister said the AP Road Safety Authority would be made a statutory body soon to strictly enforce road safety measures.
Nalsar University of Law has been entrusted with the job of preparing the necessary statute in three months.
Transport Minister S Vijayarama Raju and other top officials attended the meeting.
