Police on Wednesday night arrested eight members of a two-wheeler lifting gang at Kuppam and surrounding areas under the Palamaner sub-division and seized 54 brand new motorcycles worth over Rs. 51 lakh from them.
According to Palamaner DSP Mr. P. Shankar, in view of the unprecedented incidents of motorcycles being stolen in Bengalulru and based on the information provided by the Karnataka Police, special teams arrested eight persons at Kuppam and Palamaner. However, two others gave police the slip.
The modus operandi of the accused, all bachelors in the age group of 18 to 25 and hailing from Kuppam and Palamaner, was to lift high-end and costly motorcycles in Bengaluru and bring them to the tri-State junction at Kuppam bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for quick disposal at “incredibly cheap rates”.
Each bike, costing nearly a lakh of rupees, would be quickly disposed to gullible parties at Rs. 30,000 or even less, police said.
