The special police teams formed by Chittoor Superintendent of Police Ghattamaneni Srinivas on Wednesday night nabbed eight members of a two-wheelers lifting gang at Kuppam and surrounding areas under Palamaner sub-division, and seized as many as 54 costly and new motorcycles valued at over Rs. 51 lakh.

According to the Palamaner DSP P. Shankar, in view of unprecedented incidents of motorcycles lifting in Bengalulru and its outskirts and based on information from Karnataka counterparts, special teams took up investigation in recent months, leading to the arrest of eight youth in Kuppam and Palamaner. Two other youth gave the police a slip in the early hours of Thursday.

Habituated to lavish life, the modus operandi of the youth, all unmarried in the age group of 18-25 and hailing from Kuppam and Palamaner areas, was to lift high-end and costly motorcycles in Bengaluru city and bring them to tri-state junction Kuppam bordering both Karnataka and Tamilnadu for quick disposal at "incredibly cheap rates".

Each bike costing nearly a lakh of rupees on road would be quickly disposed to the gullible parties at Rs. 30,000 or even below. Based on further investigation, the police hope to seize several more vehicles.
