6 killed, 9 injured as trucks collide

Six persons were killed and nine others injured when two trucks, after colliding with each other, plunged into the Alamuru East Canal at Jonnada Bridge near Ravulapalem in the early hours of Wednesday. According to the police, the injured were rushed to the Rajahmundry Government Hospital.

The accident occurred when a cement-laden lorry bound for Vizag from Nandyal in Kurnool district was hit by a lorry carrying sand.

Twelve daily wage workers from Vizag district and a few others from Koraput in Odisha had boarded the Vizag-bound lorry.

The workers did not have a chance as they were fast asleep when the accident occurred. Cherukuri Satyanaryana Raju (50), driver of the cement lorry, Pangi Babu Rao (30), Dattua Raju (28), Banda Mohan Rao (26), and Sanka Battula Srinu (32),cleaner of the sand-laden lorry, were killed on the spot.

J. Bannu died while being shifted to a hospital in Kakinada.

The condition of Vijay Hemanth was stated to be critical. Chamandra Venkat Rao, driver of the sand lorry, was seriously injured.

Kiran expresses grief

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy expressed grief over the accident and directed the East Godavari district Collector and Superintendent of Police to provide the best medical care to the injured persons.
