Over 70 children had a providential escape after the school bus in which they were travelling fell off a culvert at Mandadi village in Veldurthy mandal on Monday morning.
The incident took place when the students were headed to Sri Krishnaveni Talent School at Macherla.
Rescue by locals
More than 15 children suffered serious injuries in the incident. People working in the nearby chilli fields rushed to the spot and took up rescue work.
MLA P. Ramakrishna Reddy reached the local government hospital where the children were admitted and protested against the lack of emergency care in the hospital, leading to a heated argument with the authorities there.
HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao has asked DEO Ganga Bhavani to conduct an inquiry and submit a report. Meanwhile, State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Chairperson G. Hymavathi and member P. Padmalatha enquired about the condition of the children.
