Ten workers who were trapped in a granite quarry in Prakasam district are feared dead, police said on Friday.

“Ten workers were buried in the quarry as they got trapped under tonnes of debris. We do not think there could be any survivor,” Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Navin Chand, who is supervising the rescue efforts, told PTI over phone.

“Efforts were on to retrieve their bodies, but it will take at least two more days to clear the debris,” he said. Bodies of two labourers were found Thursday night and two workers were rescued while 10 others were trapped when a part of a hillock caved in on a granite quarry near Chimakurthi village in Prakasam district Thursday evening, police said.

One labourer was pulled out early Friday morning, they said.

Fifteen workers were working in the 70-feet deep quarry, when huge boulders from a side of a hillock fell on them at about 7 pm on Thursday, they said.

The SP said a case of negligence was registered against the quarry management and two officials including a senior manager Chandrasekhar Reddy and Safety Manager Balkrishna Reddy who were arrested.

Andhra Pradesh Minister for Mines B. Srinivas Reddy was overseeing the rescue operations. Meanwhile, labourers held a protest near the site demanding action against the quarry owners.
