AMU V-C hit by car while cycling

Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Zameeruddin Shah sustained grievous injuries when his bicycle was hit by a speeding car near the Baba-e-Syed gate on the university campus on Tuesday. The incident occurred when Mr. Shah was going to his office.

The car driver who had escaped from the scene was arrested and the vehicle seized by the police.

University officials said the Vice-Chancellor had fractured two of his ribs and his legs were badly bruised. He has been admitted to the JN Medical College Hospital and is stated to be out of danger.

The Aligarh police probing the matter is said to be looking into the possibility of a deliberate attempt to harm the Vice Chancellor, who, of late, had incurred the wrath of a section of students for introducing some measures. These include banning the use of motorcycles on the campus and, instead, advocating the use of bicycles for commuting on the campus. Mr. Shah had said that he, too, would cycle down to his office from August 1.

It is said that a red car started following the Vice-Chancellor as he cycled down to his office.

As he reached the University Guest House number 2 near the Baba-e-Syed Gate, he was hit by the car. Mr. Shah’s security guard was behind him on another cycle and it was he who registered an FIR at the Civil Lines police station. The AMU V-C is the brother of actor Naseeruddin Shah.
