The party’s stand comes amidst growing speculation about a pan-Indian grand alliance to take on the BJP in 2019.

Political alliances will vary in each State and there can be no one-size-fits-all model, the Congress said on Monday. The party’s stand comes amidst growing speculation about a pan-Indian mahagatbandhan (grand alliance) to take on the BJP in 2019.

Speaking to the CNN-IBN, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar had ruled out the possibility of a grand alliance, saying it was not “practical”.

“As per my assessment, it will be a State-wise position. There might be States like Tamil Nadu, where the number one party will be the DMK... If you go to Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, you will find [that] the Congress there will be the number one party...,” he said.

Congress media in-charge Randeep Surjewala said, “Alliances need to be sewed up State-to-State. There can be no one-size- fits-all alliance. Every State has regional parties. Just to site an example, NCP and Congress are in alliance in Maharashtra and talks are on to finalise it. But it can’t be transposed to Gujarat for we feel that in Gujarat we don’t need an alliance. We have again decided to fight the elections in Bihar with the RJD. But the same alliance will not work in U.P.”

The Congress’ comments come even as the opposition is seeing hectic parleys for leadership role, with many senior leaders including Trinamool Congress’s Mamata Banerjee, saying they would not want to work under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, a relative political novice.
