“Afzal Guru should be hanged forthwith”

“It's time government put down terrorism with iron hand”

September 11, 2011 12:37 am | Updated August 03, 2016 11:36 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The government should not dither any further on sending Afzal Guru, convicted in the Parliament attack case, to the gallows, said BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu here on Saturday.

In the wake of yet another terror strike at the Delhi High Court, the second in four months, it was time the government put down terrorism with an iron hand, he said.

Addressing a media conference, he charged the UPA government with not understanding the genesis of terrorism as it was only concerned with vote-bank politics.

Finding fault with the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly against capital punishment to Rajiv killers and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's tweet on a possible similar stand by the State, Mr. Naidu said region and religion aspects had no place in dealing with the nation's enemies.

“This is not the context to discuss the merits of capital punishment,” he said.
