After conquering Everest, schoolboy now scales Mt. Lhotse

May 21, 2011 01:55 am | Updated 01:55 am IST - Kathmandu:

A schoolboy from Noida has achieved a rare double; after being the youngest Indian to scale Mount Everest, he has ascended the neighbouring peak Mt. Lhotse.

Arjun Vajpayee, a class 12 student of the Ryan International School in Noida, reached the peak of the 8,516 metre Mt. Lhotse, world's fourth highest peak, on Thursday along with two Nepalese Sherpa guides, his mother Priya Vajpayee said.

Arjun has ambitions to become the first Indian to scale as many as 10 over 8,000 metre-high Himalayan peaks.

On May 22, 2010, he climbed the 8,848 metre-high Everest at the age of 16.

Arjun completed a basic course in mountaineering from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering at Uttarkashi and after taking part in a number of expeditions to peaks over 6,000 metres high set his sights on the Everest last year.

Breaks record

Arjun broke the record of Krushnaa Patil, 18, from Maharashtra who became the youngest Indian to reach Everest in 2009.
