The death toll in the violence at Netai in the Lalgarh area of Paschim Medinipur district on January 7 rose to nine, with a woman succumbing to her bullet wounds in a State hospital here on Sunday.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee alleged that she was a victim of negligence of the hospital authorities. Health Minister Surya Kanta Mishra said that an enquiry would be held if any specific complaint was received.
Another woman, injured in the firing, died in hospital here on January 14.
Governor M.K. Narayanan, who had earlier condemned the violence and described the day of the incident as one of “shame and sorrow” for the State, said that he would be visiting Netai and Jhalda in Purulia district (where seven workers of the All India Forward Bloc had been killed allegedly by Maoists last month) on Wednesday.
He would be going there as Governor and not as an adviser on counter-terrorism, Mr. Narayanan told journalists. He said that he was discussing the steps being taken to curb violence in the region with State officials concerned.
The Communist Party of India general secretary A.B. Bardhan, described the incident at Netai as “very unfortunate” and a consequence of a “knee-jerk reaction.”
