Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and Rajya Sabha member Brinda Karat on Wednesday demanded immediate withdrawal of “unfair, unjust and absurd” conditions imposed on Nitu Singh, a Nepalese student of Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), while suspending her deportation.
Reacting to the Maharashtra government suspending Ms. Singh’s deportation order, Ms. Karat said the State government had imposed “absurd conditions” while allowing her to return to India for a month to complete her studies.
“The Maharashtra government was forced to reconsider Ms. Singh’s deportation case because of intervention by the Union Home Ministry. While appreciating that intervention, I hope they will further intervene to ensure that these absurd conditions are withdrawn,” Ms. Karat told The Hindu.
She said the conditions were imposed to cover up the initial mistake of deporting Ms. Singh. Some conditions imposed while allowing her to come back to India include a mandatory stay in the FTII campus and a ban on her speaking to the media. Ms. Karat said such conditions only amount to
