Rahul may visit Azamgarh

February 10, 2010 12:19 am | Updated 12:19 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is likely to travel soon to Azamgarh — dubbed a “nursery of terror” — in eastern Uttar Pradesh to interact with students of Shibli National College.

Indications to this effect were given by Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Digvijay Singh on Tuesday after submitting a report on his own visit to Azamgarh to party president Sonia Gandhi.

The dates of the visit are yet to be finalised, Mr. Singh said, signalling the Congress party’s intent to remain engaged with Azamgarh despite the flak his visit drew from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Ulema Council.

Mr. Singh visited Azamgarh last week in a bid to lend a sympathetic ear to the families of youngsters picked up in terror-related cases from across the country.

According to Mr. Singh, about 30 families in and around Azamgarh were affected by these cases. And, most of the youngsters charged in these terror cases are alumni of the Shibli National College, regarded as the second largest Muslim educational institution in the country after the Aligarh Muslim University.
