A “moderate” 5.7 magnitude earthquake, with its epicentre on the India-Nepal border, jolted north India on Monday evening.

There was no immediate report of any casualty or loss of property.

The Met Department officials said the tremors, which occurred at two minutes past 5 p.m., were felt for about three seconds.

According to the United States Geological Survey website, the epicentre was 130 km from Haldwani in Uttarakhand and 93 km from Mahendranagar in Nepal.

Besides Delhi and its suburbs, tremors were felt in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh.

Nuclear plant safe

PTI reports:

India's nuclear power reactors at the atomic power stations in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are safe. “The reactors (in Bulandshahr in U.P.) are safe and continue to operate safely,” N. Nagaich, Executive Director, Corporate Planning and Corporate Communication of Nuclear Power Corporation of India, told PTI. He also said the nuclear power reactors located at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan were also unaffected by the tremors.
