The protests over the alleged custodial death of a youth intensified on Friday as protesters roughed up the Deputy Commissioner and blocked roads.
A mob of over 300-400 people, including family and relatives of the deceased Rajneesh Sharma, took to streets and demanded a CBI probe into the case.
Jammu Deputy Commissioner M K Dewadi who rushed to the spot to pacify the protesters was roughed up by women protesters, police sources said.
Later, police resorted to minor cane charge on the agitating mob.
The protesters alleged that some policemen of Ram Munshi Bagh Police station at Srinagar tortured Rajneesh in the custody which resulted in his death.
The police had earlier said that Rajneesh, who was detained on September 30 from his Sarwal residence, had allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging himself inside the police lock-up. His body was brought here two days ago but the family members refused to cremate the body and demanded a fresh post-mortem.
According to police, Rajneesh was among the five accused involved in the abduction of a minor girl near Dal lake on August 21. The abducted girl has not yet been traced.
The State BJP chief Ashok Khajuria has demanded registration of an FIR against the erring cops.
On Thusday, three policemen were suspended and a magisterial inquiry was ordered to ascertain the cause of the death.
