President pained by attacks on African nationals

May 30, 2016 11:53 pm | Updated November 17, 2021 04:23 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Speaking for the first time on the issue of attacks on African nationals in India, President Pranab Mukherjee said the attacks were painful to him personally given that as a student, political activist and Member of Parliament he had seen first-hand how India and Africa have always been close partners.

“It would be most unfortunate if the people of India were to dilute our long tradition of friendship with the people of Africa and the welcome we have always extended to them in our country,” Mr. Mukherjee cautioned while addressing the Seventh Annual Heads of Missions Conference at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.

Stating that Ministry of External Affairs in consultation with Ministry of Home Affairs is pro-actively following up on the “few isolated incidents” that have occurred he assured that African students in India should have no reason to fear for their safety and security.
