Hindustani music's legendary vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of a private hospital here. The 88-year-old Kirana Gharana exponent was hospitalised following complications related to the kidneys, upper respiratory tract and intestines.

“His condition continues to remain critical, but there has been no further deterioration in the past 24 hours. He still requires ventilator support and is on regular dialysis. His blood-pressure level is [being] maintained,” Dr. Ashish Jaiswal, Chief of Medical Services, Sahyadri Hospital, told journalists on Sunday.

The Bharat Ratna recipient has been in hospital since December 31. Last week, he complained of breathlessness and vomiting during a routine check-up.

His son, Shrinivas Joshi, has requested well-wishers and fans to pray for his father's recovery.
