A day after the government held an all-party meeting on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong words on claiming the whole of Jammu and Kashmir and highlighting human rights violations in Balochistan, the BJP said on Saturday that the move would expose the “hypocrisy” of Pakistan.
Speaking to The Hindu , Vijay Chauthaiwale, head of the party’s foreign affairs cell said Mr. Modi’s statement makes a clear distinction between Indian claims on Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and highlighting human rights abuses by Pakistan in Balochistan. “As far as PoK is concerned, there is already a unanimous resolution passed in Parliament in February 1994, saying much of what Mr. Modi said on Friday. He perhaps reiterated it in a more emphatic than perhaps had been done by the UPA government, owing to their own hesitations.”
The resolution Dr. Chauthiawale referred to was passed by Parliament in 1994 when P.V. Narasimha Rao was heading the government. The resolution said that Pakistan has illegally occupied the Indian territory and rules out any outside interference in the affairs of J&K.
“When it comes to Balochistan, there is documented evidence of massive human rights violations, murders and rapes. And India has just highlighted it to expose Pakistan’s double standards with regard to human rights violations,” he said.
