Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj will file an affidavit before the Supreme Court, contradicting the government claim that full facts were not placed before the committee that finalised the appointment of P.J. Thomas as Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC).
Ms. Swaraj said she had brought before the committee facts of the pending charges against Mr. Thomas. The government, she alleged, was speaking one untruth after another.
“Ms. Swaraj has been constrained to take this extreme step in view of the government misrepresenting facts related to the case,” Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday. In this instance, the trail led directly to the Prime Minister, who was one of three members of the committee, he alleged.
The BJP's claim is that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister were indeed aware of the details of the charges against Mr. Thomas and that Ms. Swaraj, third member of the committee, had pointed this out and insisted on recording her note of dissent. She had also warned the committee not to rush through the appointment.
