September 25, 2010 01:58 am | Updated 01:58 am IST - Mumbai:

Maharashtra Revenue Minister Narayan Rane's son Nitesh was booked for attempt to murder late on Thursday night.

A case Section 307 of the IPC was registered after Chitu Jamaluddin Sheikh told the police that Mr. Nitesh Rane had fired at him. However, the police had not recovered any firearm or bullet.

Mr. Sheikh, who worked for Swabhiman Sanghatana, an organisation run by Mr. Nitesh Rane, had gone to the organisation's office in suburban Khar when the incident took place. Mr. Sheikh, who sustained injuries on his face, got admitted to a private hospital in Powai.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal told TheHindu that the incident had resulted out of a “personal dispute.” While Mr. Sheikh demanded action against Mr. Nitesh Rane, the latter tweeted: “Can't trap a tiger using a mouse trap..better luck next time!!”

Hospital CEO Sujeet Chaterjee said that according to medical tests, the injuries were not caused by a bullet. “We have done X-ray and CT scan. It is not a bullet injury. [Sheikh's] condition is stable.” Defending his son, Mr. Narayan Rane told journalists that the police had gathered evidence. Refusing to comment on the case, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said there was no need for the government to intervene as the police were doing its job.
