Muzaffar Baig resigns from Assembly?

August 06, 2010 01:05 am | Updated November 28, 2021 09:32 pm IST - SRINAGAR:

The former Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and senior People's Democratic Party leader, Muzaffar Baig, on Thursday is said to have resigned as member of the Legislative Assembly.

Local news agency KNS quoted him as saying that the Assembly had failed to protect the lives of people in Kashmir. “I have sent my resignation to party president Mehbooba Mufti for being forwarded to the Speaker,” he said.

“Under the present circumstances there was no meaning being a member of Assembly,” he said in the letter.

Mr. Baig represents Baramulla segment, which he first won in 2002 and retained in 2008.

Ms. Mehbooba told The Hindu that she had not yet received any such communication. The Assembly Secretariat also denied having received the “resignation letter.”

Sources said his decision was the result of a feud between Ms. Mehbooba and Mr. Baig. A statement he made on a TV channel was not endorsed by the party.
