With an estimated cost of Rs.3,000 crore, the Mumbai monorail corridor, when commissioned, will be the world's second longest such corridor, built at one-fourth the cost of the world's longest.
The 19.54 km Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle monorail corridor will be second only to Japan's 23.8 km Osaka monorail corridor, says a press release issued by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority on Tuesday,
The infrastructure and operating cost of the Osaka monorail is approximately $120 million or Rs. 540 crore approximately per km to construct or Rs.12,690 crore for the entire project.
In contrast, besides the construction and operation costs, even the fares of the Mumbai monorail will be comparatively lower. To partially cover the operating cost, the Osaka monorail charges between $2 and $4.50 (Rs. 90 to Rs. 200 approximately) a person. The Mumbai monorail will charge between Rs. 8 and Rs. 20. It will halt at 18 stations compared to 19 in Osaka.
