Officials of the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) responsible for the arrest of convener of the Police Santrash Birodhi Janasadharaner Committee (PSBJC) Chhatradhar Mahato may be rewarded if a proposal to that effect is received by the government.

No proposal

On being asked whether the officers should be rewarded, Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said: “This will depend on the proposal we receive in this matter and I have not received any such proposal.”

The PSBJC leader, who was brought to Kolkata for further interrogation, was arrested in Lalgarh on September 26 by two CID officials posing as journalists.

It may be mentioned that when Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty was asked if the arrest should be seen as a major success in the government’s efforts to restore peace in Lalgarh, Mr. Chakraborty said the policemen could not arrest Mr. Mahato earlier as he was on the run as it was easy to move to Jharkhand from that area.
