MEA looking into ‘assault’ by Indian diplomat

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has taken a serious view of the alleged assault by a London-based diplomat on his wife, saying it is “carefully looking into the incident.”

“The MEA is looking into the matter” and no hasty decision can be taken as it “involves sensitive and personal issues, pertaining to individuals. It is premature to make any further comment at this stage,” official sources said when asked about the incident involving Anil Verma, official at the High Commission of India in London.

Mr. Verma was questioned by the London police, who have taken no further action as he claimed immunity from prosecution.

On December 11, the police called at his residence after neighbours reported that a woman was screaming.

A spokesperson of the U.K. Foreign Office told TheHindu that it would not tolerate any breach of the law by diplomats. It could even seek Mr. Verma's removal if he was found to have broken the law.
