Locomotive units headed for cold storage?

April 05, 2011 12:21 am | Updated 12:21 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Railways appear to have pushed into cold storage the establishment of two mega locomotive manufacturing units.

Railway Board Member(Mechanical) Sanjeev Handa admitted that the revised date for inviting bids for establishing the diesel locomotive unit at Marhaura and the electric locomotive unit at Madhepura units, both in Bihar, are likely to be put off again.

Mr. Handa said the Railways would invite bids for the two mega projects only after ensuring that its interests had been taken care of, but sought to stress that effort was on to find a suitable private player. Both the units are to be set up under the Public Private Partnership mode for which the Railways had earlier invited global bids, but without much success.

Mr. Handa said these projects would be executed in due course.

However, the Railways have decided to revise tendering norms for procurement of wagons with the objective of steadily opening up the manufacturing industry and bringing in more competitiveness.
