CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat on Friday blamed “wrong policies” of the Congress-led UPA government for the rise in prices of essential commodities.
“Prices of essential items have gone beyond the purchasing capacity of the common people because of wrong policies adopted by the Manmohan Singh government,” Mr. Karat said at a programme to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of veteran Marxist leader Nripen Chakraborty here.
Mr. Karat also said that the Centre had virtually invited foreign investment in the retail business. “The cabinet memo is under preparation before placing the PMO’s proposals to the Union Cabinet for approval. The move is aimed at safeguarding forward trading.”
Asserting that the Left parties would continue to stick for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe on the 2G spectrum, Commonwealth Games and Adarsh Housing Society scams, Mr. Karat demanded stringent action against the corrupt.
He also smelt a conspiracy against the Left Front government in West Bengal. “Everybody knows that the Trinamool Congress harbours Maoists in West Bengal to topple the Left Front government there,” he alleged.
