The Union Cabinet is likely to soon approve a recommendation for dissolution of the Jharkhand Assembly, paving the way for fresh elections.
Well placed sources in Home Ministry said here on Monday that the recommendation for dissolving the House, which has been kept under suspended animation, would be sent for Cabinet consideration within a week.
Polls in December?
The Cabinet is likely to approve the recommendation and send it to the President. Indications are the elections could be held in December.
During the last session of Parliament, President’s rule in Jharkhand was extended for six more months beyond July 18, evoking a strong reaction from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which demanded that the government facilitate early elections.
No consensus
President’s rule under Article 356 of the Constitution was imposed on January 19, following the collapse of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha government.
The then Chief Minister Shibu Soren had lost in a key by-election, from Tamar, which he ought to have won to continue in power.
After he stepped down, there was no consensus on the leadership of an alternative government.
