Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday said it was the duty of the Gujarat government to ensure the security of IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who had filed an affidavit against Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

“I cannot vouchsafe the contents of the officer's statement, but if he fears for his life, it is the duty of the State government to ensure his security and see to it that no harm comes to him,” Mr. Chidambaram told journalists here.

Meanwhile, ANHAD (Act now for Harmony and Democracy) has urged the Home Minister to ensure that Mr. Bhatt is provided adequate and effective security.

In a letter to Mr. Chidambaram, ANHAD expressed concern and shock over the withdrawal of the security cover given to Mr. Bhatt.
