With India Gate in the background, 35,000 people, including schoolchildren and officials, will turn Rajpath here into one big yoga mat on Sunday morning.
Unlike Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s other mega event — the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched on October 2 — the Rajpath show is part of the first International Day of Yoga to be celebrated in 192 countries and 251 cities under the U.N. banner.
Many State governments and private bodies will host events intended to promote wellness and health.
In Delhi, the Prime Minister is expected to be part of a high-profile cast that will include Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Mr. Modi is expected to speak for a few minutes at the event, which will start at 7 a.m. and last 35 minutes after which 35 easy-to-do yoga asanas will be performed. Baba Ramdev is also expected to participate.
With all the publicity and government backing, the Ministry of AYUSH hopes to get the Rajpath event into the Guinness Book for the “largest yoga demonstration or class at a single venue”.
