India on Monday discussed with Nepal the issue of cross border criminal activities and the need to strengthen immigration points.
The issues were discussed at a meeting between Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and his Nepal counterpart Bhim Rawa here.
After the meeting, Mr. Rawa told reporters that the two sides exchanged views on mutual security, cross border criminal activities and organised crime and on the need to strengthen immigration points to ensure that no criminal element and potential terrorists cross the border.
Asked about Nepal becoming a hub of fake Indian currency notes, he said, “We have taken strongest measures from our side to control it.”
The meeting came close on the heels of the visit by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna to Kathmandu during which India expressing concerns over Nepal being used for anti-India activities.
At his meeting with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal last week, Krishna voiced concern about Nepal being used to pump in fake currency to India.
He had emphasised the need for “constant vigil” on the security front, considering the fact that “terrorists find safe haven” in the neighbourhood.
However, after his meeting with Madhav Nepal, Mr. Krishna said “We have been assured that Nepalese soil will not be allowed to be used against any neighbour which includes India.”
