The Union Water Resources Ministry has filed in the Supreme Court a detailed report prepared by a consortium of Indian Institute of Technology experts assigned by the Centre to give a road map for the revival of the river Ganga to its former “wholesome” self.

In an affidavit dated March 10, the Ministry told the court that the Ganga River Basin Management Plan (GRBMP) 2015 drafted by the IIT consortium had pointed to several problems, from rapid urbanisation to over-grazing, which has led to the slow destruction of the river. According to the plan, the escalating impact of human behaviour on the Ganga river basin requires restorative action to be started on a mission mode.
