Gurunath Kulkarni dead

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and general secretary Gurunath Kulkarni passed away on Wednesday.

Mr. Kulkarni, has been ailing for a while. He was 71. His funeral will be held on Thursday.

A member of the State Legislative Council since 2002, and an active Congress member Mr. Kulkarni joined the NCP in 1999.

An advocate by profession, he practiced in the Bombay High Court and was active in the social sphere in his native Malvan in the Konkan region. He joined the Congress in 1969 and later became president of the National Students Union in Mumbai in 1971.

He was an office bearer in the youth Congress and later member of the All India Congress Committee.

Known for his outspokenness and commitment to socialist ideals , Mr. Kulkarni was held in respect across parties.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said the State had lost a multifaceted personality, while Eknath Khadse of the Bharatiya Janata Party said that Mr. Kulkarni had worked for the uplift of the common man.

He would be remembered for his organizational skills and simplicity.
