The Gujarat government on Wednesday banned expelled BJP leader Jaswant Singh’s controversial book on Pakistan founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah which allegedly defamed the image of Vallabhbhai Patel, officials in the Chief Minister’s Office said.
The BJP had on Tuesday completely disassociated from Mr. Singh’s book “Jinnah — India, Partition, Independence“.
Mr. Singh had praised Jinnah and charged the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Vallabhbhai Patel with being responsible for the partition of India.
The ban on Mr. Singh’s book came soon after his expulsion from BJP.
“The book has been banned because it contains defamatory references regarding Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who is considered the architect of the modern India,” a senior minister in the State government told PTI.
“Nobody in India ever believed that Sardar Patel was even remotely responsible for the partition of the country,” he said.
Asked whether this was a political decision, he said, “this is an administrative decision.”
“If not banned, this book will defame and tarnish the image of Sardar Patel in the State of his birth,” the minister said.
