The government is considering the proposal to change the names of four High Courts in the country following new nomenclatures of the cities where they are located.

The Ministry of Law and Justice has received the proposal to change the names of Bombay High Court, Madras High Court, Calcutta High Court and Gauhati High Court according to the present names of these cities.

“The proposal to change the names of ‘Bombay High Court’ as ‘Mumbai High Court’, ‘Calcutta High Court’ as ‘Kolkata High Court’, ‘Gauhati High Court’ as ‘Guwahati High Court’ and ’Madras High Court’ as ‘Chennai High Court’ is under consideration of Government. There is no move to rename other High Courts,” Ministry of Law and Justice has said in an RTI reply to Subhash Chandra Agrawal.

Agrawal has also asked if different High Courts can frame different rules for the processing of the RTI Applications send to them. The Ministry forwarded the request regarding the rules to Department of Personnel and Training saying, “Department of Justice is not concerned with framing of the Rules under the RTI Act, 2005.”
