India on Thursday said it was in touch with Sri Lanka over detention of Presidential candidate and General (retired) Sarath Fonseka and “trusted” the government to follow the law.
In response to a question on General Fonseka’s detention, Foreign Office spokesman Vishnu Prakash said, “We have been in touch with the Government of Sri Lanka over the detention of General Fonseka. As a friend and neighbour, we trust that due processes of the law will be observed in democratic Sri Lanka in this matter.”
Meanwhile, India has despatched a senior official to Sri Lanka to assess the situation first hand. The official is expected to meet senior officials and discuss the effects of the recent situation on the peace process, said Ministry of External Affairs officials here.
