Eunuch community stage protest against Asaram Bapu

Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, already facing an alleged attempt to murder charge, has landed himself in a new controversy.

Eunuchs in Ahmedabad on Monday staged a demonstration and burnt the effigy of the godman in protest against his alleged obscene gestures and public ridiculing of eunuchs at his satsang at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday.

“It is totally unbecoming of a person who claims he is a saint,” said eunuch community leader Sonia Dey, who led the demonstration against Asaram Bapu here, and demanded that he publicly apologise to the eunuch community across the country.

According to reports, Asaram Bapu made obscene gestures at his satsang and tried to copy Kamla, a eunuch who is the mayor of Sagar in M.P.

The immediate provocation was believed to be his throwing a challenge to the Gujarat police to arrest him on various charges, but that if an “innocent” like him was put behind bars, the conditions of the people in India would be like the people of Sagar under a eunuch mayor.

“We are also planning to move the Gujarat High Court against Asaram Bapu on this issue,” Ms. Dey said, adding that the entire community was united against him on the issue.

The Asaram Ashram at Motera on the outskirts of Ahmedabad has come under shadow since the mysterious death in the ashram premises in July, 2008 of two boys, Deepesh and Abhishek, students of the ashram school.

Even as a judicial inquiry into the murder was in progress following allegations of black magic, the Sabarmati police lodged an attempt to murder offence against Asaram Bapu and two others after one of his former disciples, Raju Chandok, narrowly escaped gunshots near his residence in November. Chandok had earlier made public the godman’s alleged sexual misconduct with some women devotees in Jaipur.

After having failed to influence the BJP government in the State to withdraw all criminal charges against him and the ashram, Asaram Bapu also criticised Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the owner of a local Gujarati daily which ran a campaign against him and published his alleged misdeeds, claiming that both would face “God’s wrath” within a month for harassing an innocent like him.
